FAQs

Q: What is SCFS?

A: SCFS (or Sustainable Community Food Systems) is a minor program at UConn. It focuses on food justice, agriculture, sustainability, policy, etc. relating to the production and distribution of food.

Q: What are the requirements?

A: SCFS is an 18-credit minor program. The course requirements are somewhat flexible; view our Curriculum Outline for more information.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: Talk to your advisor about declaring an SCFS minor. If you need any guidance, email scfs@uconn.edu!

Q: What about that summer internship program I keep hearing about?

A: The summer internship is a 10-week program with a stipend of about $4000. You can intern with a number of different organizations; the most popular choice is Spring Valley Student Farm, but there are many other opportunities in different areas of SCFS.

To sign up for the internship, fill out this form by March 3, 2023!

Q: Do I have to be enrolled in the minor to participate in the summer internship?

A: It is encouraged that you are enrolled in the minor (you'll be earning credit towards it anyways!). However, it is not required. If you're at all interested, just fill out the form linked above or contact scfs@uconn.edu!

Q: Do I have to be an environmental studies major to add an SCFS minor?

A: No! In fact, you can have any major and still be eligible to enroll in SCFS.

Q: I saw the curriculum and I don’t think SCFS will fit into my schedule. Can the curriculum be modified?

A: The curriculum outlined on our website is just one possible way of completing the course. We can work with you to accommodate your schedule!
